For Dirk de Waal, teaching in an Active Learning Classroom wasn’t just a change of scenery—it was a transformation in his approach to teaching. The classroom’s flexible design, technology, and collaborative layout created a dynamic learning environment where his students thrived.
From peer-to-peer critiques on shared screens to brainstorming on whiteboard tables, the space fostered deep engagement, meaningful discussions, and even higher attendance rates. Dirk welcomed the opportunity to break down traditional hierarchies and encourage students to take an active role in their own learning through real-world applications, playful experimentation, and an emphasis on inclusion.
The students found new confidence in their abilities and meaningful learning opportunities through their collaborating with each other
