Danielle and her teaching colleague wanted to find a way to ensure all students could receive participation marks, even if they couldn’t attend class.
In person, students would hand in short reflections on index cards at the end of the seminar sessions. Building on this, they introduced a weekly one- paragraph reflection where students discussed one point from the week’s teaching that resonated with them and how it related to their own experience.
Not only did this allow her to see that students were engaging with the course content, Danielle found that it informed what she focused on in class so she could reduce lecturing and spend more time on discussion.
